SeaSailSurfer of February 2007 : Maud Fontenoy
A galley slave around the word in the wrong way
After rowing alone across the Atlantic and the Pacific, Maud Fontenoy decided to sail around the world in the wrong way. But Dee Caffari did it before her. Then she chose another course : from La Réunion in the Indian ocean to… La Réunion. But after rounding the three capes, her monohull’s mast did broke. And she continued.
Sailing alone aboard past Jean-Luc Van Den Heede’s giant monohull is a big challenge. Sailing her around the world is a bigger trip. And doing it against the wind and the currents may be creasy. But Maud Fontenoy did it. And she opened a new course. If it is not an official round the word course, it is a beautifull round the Southern Ocean course. Well done.

On said kitesurfing is not sailing. Other said the Luderitz Speed Challenge’ spot is not deep enough. But the channel in Namibia is a fixed place with 500 meters marks and is more than 80 cm deep. When kitesurfers and windsurfers sail there, there are truly in the spirit of the original Weymouth and Brest Speed Weekds. Their records are not (…)
