MINI BARCELONA

Sébastien Roubinet and Jean-Pierre Balmes win the Mini Barcelona

mardi 21 mai 2002

The second edition of the Mini Barcelona 2002 took place between the 11th and 18th May, last week. A total of 23 boats participated in this 530 miles non-stop-race. The race consisted of sailing from Barcelona heading to Menorca, and then Formentera leaving all Balearic Isles starboard side, then proceeding to Denia and back to Barcelona. The winner, Adrenaline, covered the 530 miles in 5 days and 12 hours. Six days and 22 hours took the last boat of the fleet to complete the race ! The fleet suffered of long calms and very light winds, which made a hard and very long race, together with the strong sun.

The fleet was divided in two categories, 12 protos and 11 series, both double handed. French, Spanish, Belgium, German, British, and Swiss boats participated in the race, where the French and the Spanish fleets were the most crowded.

In protos, Adrenaline (Sebastian Routine & Boris Teisserenc) won the race, followed by the Spanish boats Saladino (Bruno Garcia & Borja Pella), and Zingaro (Willy Garcia & David Pella). In series, the podium was for Oryx (Jean Pierre Balmes & Christian Schmidt), followed by Almukantar (Laurent Jaunin & Maurice Veluzat), and Armens (David Tabore & Erwan Tymen).

On May 11th, and after a few hours waiting for the first knots of wind to show up, the race started with a light southerly breeze and the boats started reaching towards the island of Menorca, where the first control had been established by the organisation Organisation #organisation . The boats had to sail between the island of Menorca and the small island called "Isla del Aire". This first part of the race was rather quick, and the fleet covered the first leg of 140 miles in some 26 hours. The first boat to cross this island was Adrenaline, followed by Tip Top and Ulisses. The fleet remained rather close to each other on the way to the second control, established in the light of La Mola de Formentera, where the lead changed to Tip Top, followed by Ulisses and Sampaquita. Who all three kept the leading positions until the next control, in Denia. Saladino, Zingaro and Adrenaline, who at the end of the race took a more Eastern option which turned out to be the best one, always followed them very closely.

The Spanish fleet has been growing constantly since the last edition of this race took place, back in December 2000, when only three Pogos and one Coco participated in this race. During this time, several projects have been developed with a common target : the Mini Transat 2003, and the Spanish fleet has been becoming more powerful. Nine boats participated in this race : three Trance 6.50 (Finot design made in Spain), one Ulisses 65 (Teixido design made in Spain), Sampaquita (Lombard), three Pogos and one Coco. These boats, together with new coming Spanish projects, will be participating in many races of the Classe Mini during this year.

The race has been organised by the ANS (Associacio de Navegants Solitaris) with the support of the R.C.M.B. (Reial Club Maritim de Barcelona), and the sponsoring Sponsoring #Sponsoring of Autoterminal, for its second time and, with this second edition, the race has consolidated between the Mini races in the Mediterranean.
