Transat 650 Charente Maritime Bahia
Denis Hugues’ balance
vendredi 2 novembre 2001 – Christophe Guigueno
The organizer of the Transat 650 makes a balance of his race. [2]
"The first thing that makes people entering in the Transat 650 is to see their faces when they arrive. After one month of race aboard a 6.50 meters long monohull they have met many different weather. After one month, they learn a lot about themselves and about tactics and weather forecast. It is a real school...
Few of them were looking for an entry fee in the professional world like Yannick Bestaven. For the biggest part of them, this was a dream to accomplish. It is an adventure. After the arriving, the first sailors stay to wait for the last ones.
Sailing is most of the time a mechanical sport. This race is a human adventure. The dream of their live. Like for Antonio Pedro da Cruz who continues for the second time despite his technical problems.
this year, the course was different. For the first time from 1977, the minis have crossed the equator line. They had to pass through the doldrums. The first part of the fleet did not stayed becalmed but the rest of the fleet met this very hard area with gales and calms.
The particularity of this edition is the high speed of the second leg with the first minis joining Salvador at 6.6 knots of average speed. And for the first time, a skipper won the race by winning both legs. It is not chance but talent."
