Omega Seamaster Cup
Coutts beats Barker, Beadsworth and Presti
Two elimination matches to go
jeudi 6 juin 2002 –
In the first race of today between Alinghi and GBR Challenge, the two contestants chose opposite sides at the start, Alinghi chose the right side whilst GBR started at the pin. At the first crossing GBR were behind by two lengths, but they managed to gain wind causing Coutts to make a cautionary move thus gaining a penalty point.
Regardless of this the Swiss team remained calm and reached the first mark with a 10 second margin. During the downwind leg, Coutts remained ahead and with just one jybe he pointed straight towards the mark. His advantage was then of 30 seconds. Beadsworth overluffing lost precious seconds, whereas Coutts did not make any mistakes. With the advantage gained and after having the penalty point deducted he reached the finish line with a 10 second advantage.
In the second race between Alinghi and Le Defi Areva, Russel Coutts was perfect. In a race full of incidents ( the onboard umpire fell off the French teams boat) Coutts at the first mark was ahead by a 20 second margin. The French team made a bad error on the downwind leg, causing the gennaker to fall into the sea. Shortly after Presti also broke the main sail. Pure administration is all Coutts had to do to win the race.
In Friday programme the last two elimination matches will be raced, followed on by the semi finals.
