Round Robin 2 Matches 2 : First defeat for OneWorld

Alinghi takes the lead of the provisional rankings

Matches between OneWorld and Alinghi may be the final matches of the Louis Vuitton Cup. In those conditions, both team try to get a psychological advantage on their main oponent. But, more important is the place of number one of the round robins wich will offer the decision place which is played by both challengers. The winner of the first two Round Robins will be able to chose his opponent in the quarters of final.

• Match 1 Orm SWE 73 wins againstLe Defi FRA 69 (1’ 19")

Suedish Victory Challenge did chose to change Orn for Orm. This is the only challenger to sail a second boat in the round robins when all the other teams have decided to keep their first boat of the new 2002 generation.

The match started at 12:15. The Défi Areva was first on the line, one little second ahead and was able to cross few times ahead the swedish team in the first beat. But Orm took the lead when rounding mark one and then increased her lead to the arriving.

• Match 2 Oracle BMW Racing USA 76 wins against Mascalzone Latino ITA 72 (2’ 40")

Larry Ellison new change made Chris Dickson back at the helm of his boat. The famous Kiwi helmsman did sailed for the first time at the steer of a new generation IACC boat. For his first match, he raced against a low level challenger, Mascalzone Latino. There had been no surprise even if the italian crew was able to stay in the match during the first beat. But the final delta was 2 minutes and forty seconds at the advantag of the team from San Francisco.

• Match 3 Alinghi SUI 64 wins against OneWorld USA 67 (27")

Today’s racing proved to be exciting as the two teams at the top of the leaderboard met each other under near perfect racing conditions on the Hauraki Gulf. OneWorld won the start, choosing the favored port side of the course. The pair of boats split as they sailed up the first beat with Alinghi just meters ahead at the first crossing. USA 67 benefited from a wind shift and gained a few meters rounding the first mark 22 seconds behind SUI 64. Alinghi sailed an excellent race, defending their lead throughout. The race was always close and OneWorld gained on each of the downwind legs. Alinghi’s lead could not be beat and the Swiss went on to win the race by 27 seconds.

• Match 4 Luna Rossa ITA 74 wins against Stars & Stripes USA 66 (41")

The weather conditions are good today on the Hauraki Gulf, with a Northerl breeze of 10-15 knots and clear sunny sky. Luna Rossa and Stars & Stripes opt for a split tack start, with ITA 74 at the pin end and USA 66 at the Committee Boat. Rod Davis is at the helm of
ITA 74 during the start.

Good first leg for Luna Rossa who takes an early lead over USA 66 and controls well the opponent in their approach to the first mark, where ITA 74 rounds with a 20 seconds advantage. During the first downwind run, Luna Rossa maintains her lead defending her position and rounds the second mark ahead of Stars & Stripes by 11 seconds. In the second beat the two boats sail a long tack on the left side of the course in a slightly stronger breeze, around 12 knots. Luna Rossa extends her lead and rounds mark number three 29 seconds ahead of USA 66.

In the second run the wind shifts further to the left and Luna Rossa maintains her lead controlling Stars & Stripes. At mark number four Team Prada leads by 24 seconds. After a race sailed all in the lead, Luna Rossa goes to win this second match of Round Robin Two with a delta of 41 seconds over USA 66 of Team Dennis Conner.
